REIKI: Energy to Heal

In the past weeks, I had written about the history of Reiki and had given general information on Reiki. For those of you who missed that article, you are able to read the pieces from previous weeks on the website of “Land of Lights”, www.landoflights.net . This week I would like to discuss some of the details and applications of Reiki energy. For those of you who are already initiated to Reiki, this may be a guide for your applications and treatments.

Reiki is a very gentle but strong energy that can be used in almost every health problem to heal and to diminish the effects of the illness. Reiki in the first level is applied by laying our lands on a person, a plant or an animal. Reiki in the second and third levels give us the opportunity to send Reiki energy to people who are physically distant from us, such as people living in another city. We are also able to send energy to places, conditions and events. The third level of Reiki is given in two sections. One is advanced training in application, and the second section is learning to initiate students and becoming a Reiki Master.

This week, I would like to respond to some of the most commonly posed questions about Reiki to me, and hopefully with this second article on Reiki, I will be able to clarify some of your questions.

Q: Do we need to do a special preparation to receive a Reiki treatment or to learn to do Reiki? How is the treatment done; what should we expect during the process?

You do not need any special preparations neither for a treatment nor to learn Reiki. During a Reiki treatment all that you will need to do will be to sit down or to lie down. A Reiki Master or Practitioner will put his or her hand on various parts of your body to transfer this gentle energy.

Reiki treatments are done fully clothed. You may choose to be quiet during the treatment. However, if you feel the need you are more than welcome to talk. A full treatment usually lasts approximately 40-45 minutes. Reiki treatments are usually done with putting the hands on the body. However, some masters or practitioners prefer to keep their hands a few inches above the body and give the energy to the energy field around the body.

Reiki is taught by a Reiki Master. The Master clears the energy channels of the student so that the student may give Reiki energy to himself or herself or to another person. This process is called an “initiation”. A Reiki initiation is usually done in two separate days and takes between 3-6 hours. In some courses more time is set aside to teach the history of Reiki and the life stories of f well known Reiki masters; therefore the detailed course hours vary from one teacher to another. Reiki is rather easy to learn although it is a very strong and effective energy transfer and balancing method.

Q: Is there an age limit or condition in order to learn Reiki?

No. Starting with kids from the age of six and up, everybody can learn, use and apply Reiki, regardless of your age, gender or health condition. Reiki is not a religion or a belief system. It is an energy technique, and the capacity to give Reiki is naturally inherent in all of us.

Q: After a Reiki initiation, when will we be able to use Reiki?

Immediately, that is the beauty of Reiki. Even if you are receiving your Reiki initiation in two days, immediately after your first day of initiation, you will be able to use Reiki on yourself and your family. You will be requested to give yourself Reiki for 21 consecutive days to allow yourself to this energy. Also, it is generally accepted that an action has a tendency to turn into a habit if repeated for 21 consecutive days. Many masters and gurus used this knowledge both to set new and positive habits in, and also, to clear out bad habits by keeping distant from them for 21 days. You may apply this piece of knowledge in your daily life to improve the quality of life. For example, try meditating or walking or studying a certain subject for 21 days; you will realize that it will be easier to continue afterwards.

Q: What is the difference between having a Reiki treatment and having a Reiki initiation?

During a Reiki treatment you are given Reiki energy by a Reiki Master or Practitioner. A healing process takes place. In an initiation, a Reiki Master prepares your energy channels so that you may transfer Reiki energy to yourself and others. Some people prefer to receive Reiki treatments, where as some people would like to use Reiki energy more and more frequently, and prefer to learn the technique. Usually people who have serious health problems or people who have relatives with chronic or serious health issues prefer to learn Reiki in order to help the patient.
Reiki is very effective in reducing pains, such as headaches, pain due to rheumatoid arthritis, and pains related to cancer and other illnesses. Also patients with high blood pressure and people with psychiatric disorders benefit immensely from Reiki, since this energy has a balancing, harmonizing effect. Reiki is also a great aid in helping deal with sleep disorders.

Q: If we have Reiki-I initiation, do we need to continue to the second. What are the benefits and requirements?

Although there is not a definite time interval, it is generally accepted that after you receive an initiation for the first level of Reiki, about 3 to 6 months are needed to adapt to the new energy and to move on to the second level. Yet, it all depends on the student. If person who is initiated to Reiki-I uses the energy regularly maybe ready for an earlier. However, in some cases, a person may never feel the need to receive Reiki-II.
Reiki-II is not necessarily stronger that Reiki-I. With Reiki-I energy you are able to do healing with the hands-on methods which is very effective. Reiki-II has different applications and yes it allows us to give more energy in a shorter time period if desired.

Q: How does Reiki heal a certain illness or condition?

Reiki energy brings energetical balance to our energy field that surrounds our body. When our energy field, our Aura as it is usually called, is at its ideal frequency, our cells, our organs function at their best. Therefore the body is able to heal faster, generate new cells, and is able to get rid of the toxins that seem to cause an illness.
We heal ourselves. Reiki helps provide the ideal conditions in a sense.

Q: If we have a Reiki Level-I initiation, how should be use it to benefit from it? Any daily suggestions to apply Reiki?

If you have Reiki-I, every morning before you get out of bed, give yourself for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Be sure you give Reiki to your eyes, your ears, the back of your head. This will clear your thought for the day to come. Always remind yourself that one of the principles of Reiki says: “Just for Today, do not worry.”
Also if you have pets or plants, you may give them Reiki when you feel the need to bring them to balance as well.

Q: What do you recommend us to keep in mind when giving Reiki to ourselves or another person?

Whenever you receive or do Reiki, always keep in mind that “intention” is the most important element of Reiki. Our intention to help ourselves and others opens many gates and makes healing in a way possible.
Wayne W. Dyer in his book “The Power of Intention” quotes Carlos Castaneda: “In the universe there is an immeasurable, indescribable force which shamans call intent, and absolutely everything that exits in the entire cosmos is attached to intent by a connecting link.” And finally as the famous author Norman Vincent Peale said: “You Can, If You Think You Can.”

Wish you days that are filled with all the energy you need to accomplish all of your hearts’ desires. With love,
Z.
