Magic of REIKI

Reiki means Universal Life Energy in Japanese. The word Reiki is used to define a hands-on healing technique that became popular in the last 20 to 25 years. The healing touch is as ancient as the human beings, but Reiki has been brought to attention by the Japanese healer Dr. Mikao Usui.

At the end of the 18th century, Usui had been working with various healing techniques such as Qi-Gong, which is called Kiko in Japanese. He was also intrigued by the stories of the healings of Jesus. However, he realized that most of the time during an energy healing with the methods he knew, the healer went through depletion. The healer was weakened or may even be affected by the illness the patient carries. Dr. Usui studied many disciplines such as psychology, medicine and religion to look for answers to healing. He travelled extensively to do research on energy healing, to look for a method in which the energy transfer, the energy healing could be done without badly influencing the healer.

In 1922 Dr. Usui went to a mountain to meditate and to reflect on his search and questions. As many spiritual teachers and spiritual seekers have experienced, at the end of 21 days, he had an enlightenment experience. (21 seems to be magical number on our spiritual journeys.) A ball of light seemed to come to him and enter his body. He lived through a small shock. As he went down from the mountain, he realized that he now had a stronger healing power. He started to use this new healing energy in his practice. He taught Reiki to many. Dr. Chujiro Hayashi was his mostly known successor. Dr. Hayashi taught Reiki to an American Hawayo Takata, who first came to him as a patient from Hawai. Mrs.Takata is the person that made Reiki known in the western world.

There are many excellent books on Reiki where you may read about the history of Reiki. And in many books you may read various different versions of the story of Reiki and the life of the masters.

Reiki is taught through an “initiation” done by a Reiki Master. There are three levels of Reiki. In the first level, we learn to do healing through physical touch. In the second and third levels we learn other techniques to first strengthen the energy we transfer and to do “distant healing” with which we are able to transfer energy to a person who is not near us. Learning Reiki is basically learning the channel this harmonizing intelligent healing energy.

There are no formal schools to teach Reiki, although some of the masters have gathered together to form organisations. It takes only a couple of days to learn each level of Reiki and the learning is mostly a passive process of the part of the student. The teacher during the Reiki initiation opens up and prepares the main energy channels of the student so that he or she can receive and pass on the Reiki energy. Although there are masters who give all of the three levels even in a weekend, it is generally accepted that time is needed to allow the student to get use to this new flow energy. Usually three or four months are required to move on to the second level after being initiated to the first level, and at least six months to a year to be able to receive an initiation for the third level.

The Reiki-III level is usually given in two separate parts. In the first section, the student learns all of the techniques used in Reiki healing. The second section is about becoming a Reiki Master. This process means that the student accepts the responsibility to be able to initiate others and to carry on the light of Reiki. Reiki cannot be learned through reading. It is true that most of us are able to heal through the placing of hands, so why would we need a Reiki initiation? What Reiki offers is the assurance that we are not going to diminish our energy field in a healing. And also since Reiki is a spiritually guided energy, the energy reaches where it is needed without less effort on the healer’s part.

One of the other positive aspects of Reiki is that, after we receive an initiation, we are able to treat ourselves immediately. Reiki is very effective in treating aches and pains for example. A person with head ache problems will probably not need a lot of painkillers after being attuned to Reiki. Also, I have seen many cancer patients, who require little if any painkillers even when dealing with very serious tumours.

How does Reiki work?

Energy healing methods assume that our body does not end at the level of our skin. It is assumed that we have an egg-shaped energy field around our body, having basically seven levels or layers. It reaches out from our body about from 30, 40 cm to a few meters. Each of the seven levels of the aura corresponds to a level of our being. The closest energy level to our skin being the level connected to our physical body. Other levels correspond to our emotions, our thoughts, our soul, etc. This energy field as a whole is called The Aura.

Also, you probably use the terms such as “red hot temper” or “green with envy”. These phrases are almost literally true, because most of the time, our auras take those specific colours under the influence of such emotions.

Actually, I believe most of you have felt your energy field, your aura. For example, when you stand in line, if you suddenly feel that you are not comfortable, it is probably because someone is close to you. It is probably because your energy fields are touching, and also maybe because your frequencies are not that compatible.

Our aura is not the same size all of the time. When we feel down, or negative, this field diminishes and that is why we are more prone to illnesses. Our aura is like a protective coating. Therefore, when this energy field is fed and gets strong in a patient, the body is able to heal itself.

Reiki heals by bringing the body to the ideal energy frequency and feeding and completing our energy field. When that ideal frequency level is reached, the body is able to function at its ideal. That is why for example, when a patient hurts his or her ankle, normally the person would need to stay in bed for a few days without stepping on the foot and then would definitely need to use special bondages to protect the ankle, so that it can start to heal. With applying Reiki, I have seen such troubles heal in a day, where the patient after a day of rest was able to walk with almost no problems and without bandages. As a Reiki master, I have had to chance to live and experience many of such healings happening right in front of my eyes.

Reiki is such an amazing gift to us that I would like everyone to learn and use Reiki for themselves, to heal their own bodies and lives. People with illnesses on the physical level will be able to see the benefits of Reiki almost immediately. However, one of the added bonuses is that, emotionally you will find yourself stronger. Your fears, for example, will diminish. As the seven layers of our aura receive this energy input, all the levels of our being are healed. We feel better physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Of course, it is important to use all complementary healing methods only in conjunction with modern medicine and only as a complementary aid. Always consult with your doctor first about you health problems.

With love and light,
Z.
