The Alchemist Within

The book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of the most known best sellers in the world. As far as I know the Turkish translation of the book is printed in more than 80 editions. The story is about a shepherd boy who tries to travel from Spain to Egypt following a dream, looking for this destiny, his personal treasure, to find his “personal legend” as Coelho calls it. I find the messages he channelled in this book to be very strong and uplifting. This is one of the books that every time you read, you might get different messages.

I would like to have the words to speak for themselves. Most of it is nothing new for most of you. Yet, still, it could always be good to hear again. Here are the quotes for the week to awaken “The Alchemist of Life Within”:
(And if you have any CD’s of Enya, why don’t you read them listening to her.)

“When there is no turning back, then we should concern ourselves only with the best way of going forward.”

“When you want something, the whole Universe conspires to help you realize your desire.”

“A blessing rejected becomes a curse.”

“We are all capable of achieving whatever we want and need.”

“The fear of suffering is worse that suffering itself. And no heart ever suffered when it went in search of its dreams.”

“Dreams are the language of God.”

“Only those who find life find treasure.”

“We must make the most of the times when luck is on our side and do everything to help it, just as it is helping us.”

“Never give up on your dreams – follow the signs.”

“Everyone has a treasure that is waiting just for him.”

“When we have great treasures before us, we can never see them.”

“Only one thing makes a dream impossible: the fear of failure.”

“A task is only complete when the objective has been achieved.”

“Each moment spent searching is also a moment spent finding.”

“Love will never separate a man from his personal legend’.”

“God created the desert so that Man could smile when he saw the palm tree.”

“The darkest hour was just before dawn.”

“When every day seems the same, it is because we have stopped noticing the good things that appear in our lives.”

“Everyone has their own way of learning.”

“It is important never to relax however far you have come.”

“The closer you get to your dream, the more your personal legend becomes your real reason for living.”

“The simplest things are the most extraordinary, and only the wise can see them.”

“Eat when it is time to eat. And walk when it is time to walk.”

“There is no such thing as a strange world, only a new one.”

“A search always starts with Beginner’s Luck and ends with the Test of the Conqueror.”

“You must find your treasure in order to make sense of everything you discovered on the path.”

“It is precisely the possibility of realizing a dream that makes life more interesting.”

“Just before a dream is fulfilled, the Soul of the World decides to test everything that was learned on the journey.”

“Sometimes it is impossible to stop the river of life.”

Coelho believes that we all have personal legend, a special story to write, a special mission to accomplish. In the Alchemist, he shares signs and clues that could help us walk on our special path.

There are other methods and spiritual sciences that can help us tap into the information source to retrieve information to lead you on forward. Kabbalistic astrology, Tarot, and Numerology are some of the methods that can be used to look into the life goals and missions that we were given to carry out in this life. None of these are fortune tellings. Rather they are methods that help you to look into the energies available at certain periods of time, as well as energies that push us in a certain direction. Being aware of them may help us follow the signposts along the way

There are many methods that we can use. However, I would like to mention again that “being aware” of life is always the simplest, but the strongest tool. You have within you the power to create the magic of your life, to make your life worth living and to enjoy every moment. Please use your gifts and as Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi says “write your own sacred text of life.”

Look for the signs and you will find the answers.

Wish you the best.

Coelho Wants to Say

I have been re-reading Paulo Coelho’s books lately. The Alchemist is my all time favourite and I recommend you to read it and if you have already, maybe it is time to re-read it. This book seems to change as we change and keeps on bringing new messages every time we read it.

Yet, this time I will share some passages from this two other books: Veronica Decides to Die and Eleven Minutes.

From
Veronica Decides to Die

** I want to continue being mad, living my life the way I dream it, and not the way other people want it to be.

**They think they are normal, because they all do the same thing.

**People never learn anything by being told, they have to find out for themselves.

**Madness is the inability to communicate your ideas. It's as if you were in a foreign country, able to see and understand everything that's going on around you, but incapable of explaining what you need to know or of being helped, because you don't understand the language they speak there.

**What makes a person hate themselves??

- Cowardice perhaps. Or the eternal fear of being wrong, of not doing what others expect.

**The happier people can be, the unhappier they are.

** You have two choices; to control your mind or to let your mind control you.

**There are only two prohibitions, one according to man's law, the other according to God's; Never force a sexual relationship on anyone, because that is considered to be rape. And never have sexual relations with children, because that is the worst of all sins. Apart from that, you are free. There is always someone who wants exactly what you want.

**''Am I cured?''

''No .You are someone who is different, but who wants to be the same as everyone else. And that, in my view, is a serious illness.''

''Is wanting to be different a serious illness?''

''It is if you force yourself to be the same as everyone else; it causes neuroses, psychoses and paranoia. It's a distortion of nature, it goes against God's Laws, for in all the world's woods and forests, He did not create a single leaf the same as another. But you think it's mad to be different and that's why you choose to live in a hospital for mads, because everyone is different here, and so you appear to be the same as everyone else. Do you understand? People go against the nature because they lack the courage to be different, and the organism starts to produce Bitterness.

**The man and woman who shook the world were ordinary men ad women, like him, like his father, like the girlfriend he knew he was losing. They were full of the same doubts and anxieties that all human beings experienced in their daily routine. They were people who had no special interest in religion or God, in expending their minds or reaching a new level of consciousness, until one day they simply decided to change everything .The most interesting thing about the book was that it told how, in each of those lives, there was a single magical moment that made them set off their own vision of Paradise.

They were people who had not allowed their lives to pass by blankly, and who, to achieve what they wanted, had begged for alms or courted kings, used diplomacy or force, flouted laws or faced the wrath of the powers-that-be, but who had never given up, and were always able to see the advantages in any difficulty that presented itself.

From
Eleven Minutes

**The great aim of every human being is to understand the meaning of total love. Love is not to be found in someone else, but in ourselves; we simply awaken it. But in order to do that, we need the other person. The universe only makes sense when we have someone to share our feelings with.

**Keeping passion at bay or surrendering blindly to it-which of these two attitudes is the least destructive?

**You don't know what loneliness is like when you have the chance to be with the other people all the time, when you get invitations every night to parties, opening nights at the theater. When women are always ringing you up, women who love your work, who say how much they would like to have supper with you-they are beautiful, intelligent, educated women. But something pushes you away and says; ''Don't go. You won't enjoy yourself. You'll spend the whole night trying to impress them and squander your energies proving to yourself how you can charm the whole world. ''

**I want you how ever you want to be wanted.

**Instead of buying something that you would like to have, I'm giving you something that is mine, truly mine. A gift. A sign of respect for the person before me, asking him to understand how important it is to be by his side. Now he has a small part of me with him, which I gave him with my free, spontaneous will.

**Really important meetings are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other.

Generally speaking, these meetings occur when we reach a limit, when we need to die and reborn emotionally. These meetings are waiting for us, but more often than not, we avoid them happening. If we are desperate, though, if we have nothing to lose, or if we are full of enthusiasm for life, then the unknown reveals itself and our universe changes direction.

Everyone knows to love, because we are all born with that gift. Some people have a natural talent for it, but the majority of us have to re-learn, to remember how to love, and everyone, without exception, needs to burn on the bonfire of past emotions, to relieve certain joys and griefs, certain ups and downs, until they can see the connecting thread that exists behind each new encounter; because there is a connecting thread.

And then, our bodies learn to speak the language of the soul.

**No one can know how to humiliate another person if they themselves have not experienced humiliation.

**When I had nothing to lose, I had everything. When I stopped being who I am,I found myself.

** We are all human beings,we are born full of guilt;we feel terrified when happiness becomes a real possibility;and we die to punish everyone else because we feel impotent,ill-used and unhappy.

**In order to master the soul, one must also learn to master the body.

**You experienced pain yesterday and you discovered that it led to pleasure. You experienced it today and found peace. That's why I am telling you; don't get used to it, because it is very easy to become habituated; it's a very powerful drug. It's in our daily lives, in our hidden suffering, in the sacrifices we make, blaming love for the destruction of our dreams. Pain is frightening, when it shows its real face, but it is seductive when it comes disguised as sacrifice or self-denial. Or Cowardice. However much we may reject it, we human beings always find a way of being with pain, of flirting with it, and making it a part of our lives.

If you think you can live without suffering, that's a great step forward, but don't imagine that other people will understand you. True, no one wants to suffer, and yet nearly everyone seeks out pain and sacrifice, and then they fell justified, pure, deserving of the respect of their children, husbands, neighbours, God. What makes the world go round is not he search for pleasure.

Sons give up their dreams to please their parents, parents give up their lives in order to please their children; pain and suffering are used to justify the one thing that should bring only joy; Love.

**Love one another, but let's not try to possess one another.

**Search for happiness is more important than the need for pain.

Z.

Coelho Continued

One of Paulo Coelho’s books, The Pilgrimage or Hac as it is called in Turkish, is freshly out in Turkish. It is not a new book. It was published in 1987. However, the Turkish edition came out only a few weeks ago. As most of his books, this one is immediately on the best-sellers list. In this book Coelho says: “By changing the way you do routine things you allow a new person to grow inside you.”

Are we really trapped inside our routines? What do we expect from life, and what to we give back to life? What are our true desires? And deepest fears? What do we not dare? What could we stand up for? What are our possibilities that we do not have the courage to look into? Life poses many questions to us; however, do we really try to find our own answers? Or do we try to live the day by a predefined set of acceptable behaviours? And what if we really did try to go out to find our unique path? Would we be facing a disaster or a miracle?

Each sentence in Coelho’s books seems to carry a lot of messages. In all of his books, he wants us to question why we came here for. What is the meaning of it all? In The Alchemist, or Veronica Decides to Die, or The Manuel of the Warrior of Light, in all of his books, he points out the importance of listening to our own heart and going after the life we were meant to live.

***

Without adding more thoughts of my own, I would like to continue by just quoting Coelho and this time from his book The Pilgrimage:

v “The Good Fight is the one that we fight in the name of our dreams.”

v “Don’t try to be brave when it is enough to be intelligent.”

v “An enemy always represents a weakness. This might be fear of physical pain, but it could also be a premature sense of victory or desire to abandon the fight because it is no longer worthwhile.”

v “Attacking or fleeing is a part of the struggle; being paralyzed by fear is not.”

v “The first indication that we are killing our dreams is lack of time.”

v “Man can never stop dreaming. Dreams nourish the soul just as food nourishes the body.”

v “The second indication of the death of our dreams is certainty.”

v “There is no need to climb a mountain in order to know that it is high.”

v “If only we could be enlightened enough to be able to listen in the silence.”

v “When someone wants something then they should be aware that they are taking a risk. This is precisely what makes life interesting.”

v “The road to Santiago is the road of ordinary people.”

v “A threat need not provoke a response if it is not taken up.”

v “The search for happiness is purely personal and not a model we can give to others.”

v “A faithless fan can make a team lose a game they have won.”

v “Few take up the burden of their own victory; most give up dreams when they become impossible.”

v “The third indication that our dreams are dead is peace.”

v “Time does not always pass at the same speed. We are the one who determine that speed.”

v “To teach is to show what is possible; to learn is to make yourself possible.”

v “No man is an island. To fight the Good Fight we need help.”

v “Death does not allow us to postpone all the things we can experience now.”

v “The only way to save our dreams is by being generous with ourselves.”

v “When you travel towards your objective, be sure to pay attention to the path. The path teaches us the best way to arrive.”

v “People always arrive promptly at the places where they are expected.”

v “In our obsessive wish to arrive, we often forget the most important thing, which is the journey.”

***

And I will conclude with one final quote from Coelho’s The Alchemist:

“It is precisely the possibility of realizing a dream that makes life more interesting.”

Coelho makes me think, feel, wish and wonder. And he definitely makes me want to dream a whole lot more. Wish you love and many happy dreams that come true.
